Why CEO of Google - Sundar Pichai replied to my email?
I am having fun analyzing what my heart does naturally! :D
9 years ago, as a student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur,
I emailed the CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai.
He replied to my cold email - after a week.
As one of the most successful world leaders, his time is more precious than mine.
As I think back from the perspective of Sundar Pichai, here are some things I can imagine:
1. Sundar Pichai gets a ton of emails. He has to decide which ones to avoid and the ones to respond
2. Sundar Pichai has most of his financial needs fulfilled. So that's a hard way to get a personal response from Sundar.
3. Sundar Pichai wants to give back and create an impact on the world. He wants to give back to the community that got him to the place he is at - a higher chance of a response.
Some of my observations from his email reply include:
He replied after a week
He apologized - and shared his plan
His response is personalized to me, while my email is addressed to him as "Sir"
I have observed my emails to many successful people; my conversation rate is high.
Here's my 8-step guide to increasing cold email conversation rate:
Investment - either emotional or financial. My email above is an emotional investment. I can't offer any money to Sundar - he already has whatever he wants. But I can help create more impact in ways he cares about
Subject - Clear, catchy - to something that shaped his life
Short email - if the email takes more than 30 sec to read, you will lose the reader. My emails are always short
Call to action - emails with no clear call to action - won't get a reply. I was asking Sundar to visit the campus. There was a clear ask
Research - I did the groundwork for Sundar's plan to visit India. It was not an email out of the blue - Sundar was planning to visit India - I just asked him to see the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
Credibility - I was a part of the Alumni Cell, IIT Kharagpur. I mentioned my credibility in the short email — especially the credibility most relevant to the reader.
Community - The email is written in a tone for my people - not for myself. It is a simple ask for him to visit everyone and spend time with the community. It was indeed written with a giving mindset. And it was mentioned how it would help the people.
Manifestation - I manifested that he would reply :D
My overall conclusion remains we think about ourselves so much that we often forget to think from other person’s perspectives.
When we begin to think from other person’s perspectives, a lot begins to change.
Just thinking about the world's randomness and why I believe things happen in the ways they do.
He visited later, and I spent a day with him.
I will share the experience in another article!
Anything is possible, everything is possible!
Have a beautiful day in paradise; let's live today; it’s not forever! 😘🥰💕💜
